This 1931 Domingo Esteso vintage classical guitar is back from renovations in the hands of renowned Luthier Gary Southwell. Gary, who has a knack for historic guitars and replicating their sound, is one of few who could bring this Esteso back to its original majesty.
Restoration efforts were very extensive, and we are preferring to call it a Gary Southwell “1931 Esteso”, as restoration involved replacing the soundboard which had been ravaged too much by the passage of time. Repairs that Gary undertook include:
- Resetting the neck
- Restoring the head to tuning pegs (tuning machines were added at some point in the guitar’s life)
- Removing replicating the soundboard, rosette and purfling
Specifications:
- Soundboard: spruce
- Back and sides: cypress
- Nut width: 50mm; String length: 650mm
- Flamenco style guitar
When the guitar was under reconstruction for over two years, and is now beautiful sounding, and ready to play.
Further information on Domingo Esteso is available via Wikipedia. Information on Manuel Ramirez and his workshop, where Esteso first worked, is available on the Ramirez site covering the history of the guitar.
